Suggestions

It has always been one of our goals to create a community of independent self publishers who can share experiences and ideas.
Here are a few suggestions from our survey:

“Keep publishing expense down by seeking local, most economical publishers”

“Don't skimp on quality or number of books to send for review and awards - it's relatively inexpensive and very important!”

“Do your marketing research before you publish”

“It's not how good your book is, it's how well you can sell it.”

“Carefully review your work before hitting the publish book. You often discover misspellings, etc. too late. Have others read it first.”

“Use the web.”

“Brag about your book but always be truthful and the news will spread.”

“Invest in yourself, promote your self, get other to assist you with experience.  Join social networking teams”

“Follow the advice of people who are experienced at self publishing.”

“An on-line presence is also probably a good idea.”

“Start local and expand from there; don't invest 40,000 as I did and have yet to recoup very little”

“Have a marketing plan, have some savings to handle expenses”

“Contact someone who has self published for guidance”

“Be prepared to spend a lot of time and footwork in selling your book.  Evaluate carefully how many books to originally publish.”

“Go for it.  Start small.  Gain confidence as you go.”

“Don't print too many and don't expect to make money”

“Get a good, reliable and reasonable printer.”

“Don't give up!”

“Keep going no matter what happens!!!”

“Build links; scout market and target it; use internet; plan events for media attention; plan price with costs in mind. use one book for seed money for the next”

“Take your time and enjoy your project!”

“Talk with someone that has done it recently.”

“Network before publishing to maximize productivity throughout publication process”

“Be careful in selecting the organization that prints your book.  They promise more in terms of sales than they can deliver.  Marketing your book to the general public requires a lot of homework as to the most cost effective way of succeeding.  Beware of the publisher who wants to aid you in that process because you may end up buying a lot of advertisements, marketing, etc. that yield far less for much more costs than what you may be able to work out on your own.”

“Talk to as many people about your book before it's published. It's easier to market your book if you have a good idea of whom to target and how to go about launching your book. I did mine in bits and pieces, but wished I had done one massive launch.”

“Understand what your process is going to be before you start. Hire a professional editor and a professional designer. Consider hiring a book marketing specialist who is familiar with the special capabilities and challenges self-publishing offers. Talk to your printer about marketing tools they may offer.”

“Work with good people who come highly recommended and whom you trust.”

“Never give up. There are resources out there you just have to look. Also be ready to take matters into your own hands.”

“You must be committed to your work.”

“Patience and double check everything especially if you made a change sometimes it affects the whole book.”

“Example I changed a couple of words and had to reenter the whole book and that changed the cover and I never went into that part of the file”

“Don't not print a large number of books for the 1st run.”

“Really know your subject, resources -- and, your audience. Learn how to enjoy marketing because that becomes your primary job!”

“Create a marketing plan before you publish.”

“Work with a proofreader”

“Only print less than 100 as a personal/vanity project even if the individual print cost is more.”

“The book will not move on its own.  You have to actively promote it and be creative in your promoting targets”

“Build a website.  Mark this in and on the back of your book.  Make out business cards and a website and talk it up...your book that is.  No advertising cost is worth it...except you.  Speak your book and your website.  This will allow you to continue to communicate with your customers...past present and future.  Develop a data base, comments, sell another book, information about the author, and speaking events, etc.”

“Don’t quit your day job.”

“Get a good proof reader and printer”

“Love the work you are publishing, that’s what makes it worthwhile”

“Marketing is key.  It takes a lot of time and ingenuity.”

“Research, research and research - be proactive.”
